Why I Finally Hired a Coach (and Wish I’d Done It Sooner)

Editor’s Note (February 2026): This post was updated with a few new reflections and current links.

For three years after I discovered life coaching, I did not hire a coach.

I am stubborn by nature.

I stubbornly hoped I could figure it out myself.

My only regret in my coaching journey thus far is that delay.

Coaching is the necessary substrate to start living the life you want to live.

Having a guide and support is an efficient and effective way to become the next version of yourself.

Coaching is the secret to living a life of more joy, connection, peace, and contentment.

“Figuring it out” is not a strategy

“Figuring it out” is NOT a strategy.

A meaningful life of passion and purpose doesn’t come through figuring it out.

A meaningful life comes from mindful attention and intention.

A life of clarity and contentment doesn’t come from bopping from podcast to free session to masterclass.

It comes through:

transitioning well
showing up with ongoing presence
loving mindfully
parenting with presence
living in a mindful, minimalist way

Coaching helps you do all of these things.

It is an intentional investment in your health, happiness, contentment, relationships, and family.

In my humble opinion and experience, there is no better investment.

The cost of delaying is hefty

The cost of delaying is hefty.

I don’t know the full cost of never doing it…

…but knowing what I know now, I don’t recommend that either.

I would have missed out on so much if I had never hired a coach.

There are many ways to begin

If coaching seems like a stretch right now, please know there are many ways to jump in.

Private coaching is like a private tutor—best for quick relief and personal support.

Group coaching is an effective and more sustainable way to open your mind to new areas of growth and integrate coaching shifts into your real life.

Retreats are an immersion, study-abroad experience—deep work, a nervous system reset, and a powerful shift in perspective.
